Decades in a Day

Kate started at her new "school" today. Since our original day care decided to no longer let us do part time, we switched over to a new center that does part time schedules for ages 1 and up. (Had they allowed part time for infants, we might have switched over there sooner!) It is a very nice center, with an awesome, uber-organized director, and actually cuts five miles off my commute!

Since Kate is walking so well and eating table food, they agreed to let her start in the "Ladybug" toddler room today, rather than waiting until her birthday at the end of the month. I wondered if she would cry, being left at a new place, but she adapted with total ease! I walked her in and sat her down at the table where two other paci-sucking girls and a little boy were getting ready for their breakfast of sausage and biscuits.

It was strange walking past the infant room and realizing that she was no longer among the youngest kids. In the toddler room, there are no high chairs, but little chairs--molded plastic, like a big-kid chair, but barely off the ground on little stubby-rubber legs--and low tables. There are no cribs, but cots, just like in the two- and three-year-old rooms.

I was especially worried about her having to nap on a cot. I thought for sure she would get up every ten seconds and toddle around the room, but her teacher sat there and patted her til she fell asleep, and she did fine!

When I got home this evening, somehow she seemed so much older, aging years every moment, like she was Robin Williams in that movie "Jack."

The first sign? She had learned to go limp on command, like a child in the midst of her terrible twos...
Then, she morphed into a sullen, disaffected teenager...

Then, a thirty-something itching for the escape of reality TV... (I wish I had gotten a better picture of this--when she found the remote on the couch, she actually raised it above her head, AIMED AT THE TV! And this was no accident, she did it several times, looking at and moving closer to the TV each time!!)

... then, a befuddled old man:
"Confoundit! I can't figure out which of these newfangled do-hickeys does what!"

Fortunately, at the end of the day, she's still my little Boo-Bear who loves her paci and her toys and dances like crazy when I sing "Old MacDonald"!

Funny--I call Libbie "Boo-Bear" too. No idea where it came from!

Just about at 13 months Libbie morphed into crazy walking child. She has an attitude. She throws temper tantrums. She gets into everything. It's insane. But she's still a lot of fun!

For us, Boo-Bear emerged as a variation on two of her other nicknames, Baboo and Baby Bear. There's also Boobaloo. And, her middle name is Barry, so sometimes she's a Barry-Bear. (and I certainly never sing the theme to Gummy Bears for her, singing "Barry Bear! Jumping here and there and everywhere / high adventure that's beyond compare..." Never.)

Oh, and in case you haven't discovered this faux-pas yet, beware using Boo-bear as a password at work. It's hard to explain to IT why your password looks like "boob ear".
